Choosing Archery Equipment - Arrows

You may have carefully chosen the right compound or recurve bow for you but have you considered the arrows that you should use? Selecting the correct arrow is critical for success and needs to match your bow correctly and be really suitable for how you will be using it. Are you going to be using your bow principally for hunting or for target practise? What options are there for arrows and which ones are best for you?

Wood Arrows

In the past all arrows were made from wood but currently wooden arrows are used only in longbow competitions and by novices. They are not generally used in other circumstances since they don’t give uniform results as there are always some differences in the shape and weight of the arrows. Wooden arrows can break easily and can warp but they are economical and could be the best choose for beginners.

Fiberglass Arrows

Fiberglass arrows are consistent as they are manufactured to be more uniform but they are brittle and easily broken. They are can be fitted easily to a range of draw lengths and are often used for hunting.

Aluminium Arrows

Arrows manufactured from aluminum are much stronger than those made from wood or fibreglass. They are made in a consistent manner so are reliable. They are available in a wide variety of sizes and types so you are sure to find one correct for your bow and style. Their consistency and reliability make them ideal for use while hunting or in competitions and they are also made with arrowheads that are interchangeable. They do cost more than fiberglass or wooden arrows so may not be a good idea of you are still losing a lot of arrows. Cheaper arrows would be a better choice until your skills improve!

Carbon Composite Arrows

Carbon arrows are the choice of serious archers because they are efficient and durable and can achieve a high speed. They are manufactured with a carbon composite shell surrounding a core made from aluminium and are extremely resilient so will not break easily as fiberglass arrows can do. They are undoubtedly the finest arrows you can buy but they are much more expensive so are usually used by serious archers only.

Other Things to Think About

Fletches now are usually made from synthetic or plastic material although some handmade feather fletches can be found. Fletches are used to give stability to the arrow as it flies and to increase speed. Experiment with a range of types to find out which ones feel best. The point also needs to be considered. A specially made point for hunting, for example, is needed. Lastly, protect your arrows with a quiver and always carry spare draw strings.
